Students Work with Top Director

Northbrook MET students have been working on a unique collaboration to produce a music video, mentored by the hugely influential video director Tim Pope. The promotional video was made for up and coming band ‘The Ferns’, two of whom study Music at the college. It was produced by Moving Image degree students and Production Arts Diploma students, and filmed on location at Northbrook and other venues. The idea for the video evolved out of a desire to increase collaboration across college departments and to combine students’ skills on an exciting professional model project. The video was produced over a period of five weeks from initial meetings, through the design process and into production and post production.

Tim Pope’s wealth of experience and love of filmmaking provided the students with the energy and confidence to really excel. He was worked with, amongst others: Fatboy Slim, The Kaiser Chiefs, The Bangles, David Bowie, Neil Young, Iggy Pop, Wilko Johnson, Matt Johnson’s The The, Roger Daltrey and The Cure.

Tim was awarded a CADS Outstanding Achievement award in 2005, to join his other awards from MTV to the Brits. He has shot many lauded commercials for clients such as Agent Provocateur, Kodak, Renault, Coca-Cola and the BBC, as well as directing TV shows, live concerts and short films. Moving Image degree student Izzy Fitzgibbon directed the video and said, ‘I found this process really enjoyable – working under the guidance of Tim Pope was a fantastic experience and developing the project collaboratively with other talented students was great.’ Sadie Anderson, Course leader for Production Arts said, ‘The title of the students’ final project was ‘Collaborative Project’ and we took it as a basis to work up a brief that stretched across college departments and levels. It has been a wonderful collaboration to work on; the students have shown great positivity and vision, they worked as a formidable team, developing memorable ideas alongside solid planning. We have all been inspired by the experience of working alongside visionary director Tim Pope. The project has been an invaluable one for all concerned’.
